Health and Wellness is a Marin County Office of Education commitment to health education. Health literacy, a coordinated school health system, and a planned sequential curriculum are three critical elements to ensure children and youth develop competent lifelong understanding.
Health literacy is the ability to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services in ways that are health enhancing.
A coordinated school health system is designed to protect and promote the health and well-being of students and staff. Emphasis is placed on developing positive health-related attitudes and behaviors both for oneself and as a member of the community.
Prevention strategies are focused on optimal health, positive healthy behaviors, and health literacy is a collaborative effort within community. The resources below all support the health and wellness program and services in Marin County schools.
A communicable disease is an infectious disease that can be transferred/transmitted from an infected person to another individual. Organisms like bacteria, viruses, and parasites cause infectious diseases. Illness caused by an infectious disease is a common occurrence in students.
The School Health Manual is intended to delineate general duties and responsibilities of school personnel involved with school health, not to be definitive policies. The protocol and procedural guidelines reflect the community standards of health care for students attending schools in Marin County. The Marin County School Nurse Organization and Community Health Partners have created this school health resource to provide preventive and protective services to ensure that children are able to best profit from their educational experience.
This is an educational resource providing the following information: laws, policies, staff development training integrating nutrition and physical education into the classroom, recommended curriculum, wellness activities for a healthy classroom, community partnerships and programs.
