Anti-Defamation League Series - beginning December 6, 2017 - The Anti-Defamation League will facilitate a series of discussions across 2017-18 designed to highlight various topics that allow participants to inspect and understand their biases. It's not too late to register for the December 6th session - please see the attached flyer for more information and registration. Topics to consider for this work:
- Freedom of speech and hate speech
- Bullying and disrupting bullying
- Power and privilege
- Intersectionality
Brief Intervention for Substance Using Adolescents Training - December 7, 2017 - Hosted and held at the Marin Health and Wellness Campus, this training is for school administrators, educators, staff, counselors and nurses. This training is to build skills of those working with adolescents. BI is a short-term counseling intervention that consists of 2-4 sessions aimed at adolescents who use alcohol and/or other drugs. This approach uses motivational interviewing, cognitive behavior therapy and the stages of change model to meet the needs of adolescents. Project Based Learning 101 - December 6-8, 2017 - Join this three-day introductory PBL workshop where participants will design, assess, and manage a rigorous, relevant, standards-based project. Please see flyer for more information and registration.
Reading & Writing for the Modern Student - January 9, 2018 - The topic for the next session of this Ed Tech Series with presenter Dan Phillips, CCC-SLP, is "Reading & Writing for the Modern Student". This workshop will focus on all of the modern tools that students use in order to be able to read and write to the best of their abilities. Introducing the History Social Science Framework - January 16, 2018 - The Marin County Office of Education will host this workshop for grades 4-12 Educators. Topics of discussion include: themes in US history, new approaches to world history, and improving student literacy and student inquiry followed by a Q and A with the Framework writers.
Beyond Diversity - Courageous Conversation - January 22-23, 2018 - At the last SLT meeting, Laura Trahan spoke breifly about the work that is going on within and across our districts related to equity. We have been working with the Pacific Education group as a guide in looking at how to address bias in our work with students. This concept applies itself to our everyday life, and this 2-day training provides the opportunity to inspect our own biases. Please see the attached flyer if you are interested in registering for this experience. And while this is just one step in the journey at our look toward equity, it is definitely a step in the right direction. The January training is filling up fast - but we will be adding another date later in the spring. Rigorous PBL with Dr. Michael McDowell - January 22-24, 2018 and January 25-26, 2018 - Using Dr. Michael McDowell's "Rigorous PBL by Design" book as a tool, learn about Rigorous PBL at either the Foundational three-day workshop or the Deeper Dive two-day workshop (prerequisite: Foundational Workshop). All sessions are held at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Find registration and more information on the attached flyer.
Sexual Harassment Prevention - January 24, 2018 - All supervisory employees must receive two hours of sexual harassment prevention training. This training must be provided to supervisory employees every other year and/or if new to a supervisory position. If new to a supervisory position, you must attend this training within 6 months of beginning a supervisory position. See attached for further details including registration.
Courageous Practice: Coaching for Racial Equity - January 26, 2018 and Classrooms That Work - March 9, 2018 - The countywide Equity Committee is continuing the work of looking closely at the concept of equality and bias in our schools. They have been engaging the assistance of the Pacific Education Group to assist with this work. Beyond Diversity is a powerful, personally transforming seminar that helps educators and organizations understand the impact of race on their lives and their work. Attached is a summary of attendance of sessions already held and the session scheduled for January, 2018. Additional sessions are being added for February 26-27, 2018.
