A School-Based Suicide Risk Assessment Protocol: Effective July 1, 2022

Providing a safe, positive, and welcoming school climate and ensuring that students have trusting relationships with adults serves as the foundation for effective suicide prevention efforts. All school personnel have a legal and ethical responsibility to recognize and respond to suicidal thinking and behavior.
Per Assembly Bill 2246, all school districts must have policies in place to address student suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. These procedures specifically addresses suicide risk assessment and serve to supplement (rather than replace) existing comprehensive district policies with each of the SELPA’s member LEAs. The Marin County Wellness Collaborative in partnership with Marin County Behavioral Health, Each Mind Matters, and Marin County SELPA, developed a School Based Suicide Risk Assessment Protocol grounded heavily in evidence-based protocols.
The School-Based Suicide Risk Assessment Protocol is broken up into five (5) parts that follow below:
