    MCOE Professional Development Catalog 2018-19

    Through input from ILT-M, Principals, and other sources, we have developed a countywide collection of professional development opportunities that have been identified as purposeful and relevant to the work of our school districts.  Please take a look through the attached catalog for courses that may be of interest to you or your staff.  Also, please note that all courses are contingent on registration.

    DACA Renewal Reminder

    Click here to view a copy of the email from Canal Alliance reminding DACA recipients in Marin County to renew their status as soon as possible.  Canal Alliance has DACA renewal appointments available to assist with paperwork and answer questions They also offer financial assistance for the $495 application fee. Click here for a copy of the DACA Renewal form. Please feel free to pass this information along to all you think would be impacted by DACA renewal.

    Update: Marin County Teacher Induction Program 2018-10

    As previously shared, Induction has moved to a full fee for service implementation, with a cost of $2100 per participating teacher.  Currently our records indicate we have up to 124 teachers registered for induction, representing 16 of our districts and some local private schools.  Through various communications we have been able to determine the level of district participation and commitment.

    CDE Cal Grant Grade Point Average Submissions

    As you begin your school year, we want to take a moment to share with you an update on this school year's Cal Grant Grade Point Average submissions as they pertain to your students. Click here to view the letter from the California Department of Education outlining important dates and updated information that will assist with the succesful submission of senior gade point averages for the Cal Grant Program.

    Student of the Week 2018-19

    This student recognition program, cosponsored by the Marin Independent Journal and Marin County Office of Education, recognizes two students (typically one female, one male) from each middle school (grade 8) and high school (grade 12).  Principals are asked to identify two students who they (and their staff as appropriate) feel exemplifies the recognition of "student of the week."  There are no other parameters placed on them as these selections are intended to reflect the unique selection from each school.  Attached is the memo that was sent to site principals outlining the process.

    Global California 2030

    In an initiative to expand the teaching and learning of world languages and the number of students proficient in more than one language over the next twelve years, Global California 2030 was launched by State Superintendent Tom Torlakson.  The Mission of Global California 2030 is to equip students with the world language skills to succeed in the global economy and to fully engage with the diverse mixture of cultures and languages found in California and throughout the world.  Please refer to The CDC Website  for more information about this Initiative.

    Public Charge Information

    You may have heard that "public charge" rules for immigration are changing.  (Current law allows federal authorities to deny legal status to anyone who depends on the government for two kinds of financial support.)  This change will  affect everyone and receiving government benefits is just one factor used for immigration decisions.  To get more information please refer to the resources listed below:

    High School Voter Education Weeks - September 17-28, 2018

    The above link is a letter from the California Secretary of State and the California Department of Education regarding High School Voter Education Weeks, which take place September 17-28, 2018. 

    High School Elections Ambassador Program – Application deadline September 7, 2018

    We have an exciting student opportunity to share with you.  The Marin Elections Department, a local high school student, and the Marin County Office of Education, have partnered to bring you the High School Elections Ambassador Program.  This program is designed for high school students who are interested in community and civic engagement and experience.  Last year we had some high schools use the TEXT2Vote App, and this is just taking that experience one step further by having designated student representatives at each high school. The Ambassador application that must be submitted by September 7, 2018. 

    Student Poll Workers for Statewide General Election on November 16, 2018

    This is an opportunity for students to become more civically engaged in the November General Election process.  Each year the Marin County Elections Department hires high school students to work at polling places on Election Day.  The County gives student poll workers a stipend of $140 for their Election Day service and attending a poll worker training.  The stipend is to cover transportation, meals, and phone costs.  Many students have received credit for community service, used this experience as part of their class project, or included this information on their college application.

    Marin Teen Girls Conference - Planning meetings begin end of September

    Attached please find information on the Marin Teen Girl Ambassador Program.  The Marin's Women Commission is looking for 25 Ambassadors in grades 8 - 12 to help plan the annual Marin Teen Girl Conference to be held on March 31, 2019. As you approach the opening of school, please consider sending an ambassador to participate in and help plan this wonderful event designed to empowe4r our girls!

    The Changing Face of the Opioid Epidemic - September 12, 2018

    A Free event open to all in our Community - Dominican University will host Dr. Dan Ciccarone, UCSF School of Medicine.  Dr. Ciccarone is a national expert in opioid use disorder.  He will be discusing the shifting opioid epidemic, from prescription drug abuse toward increasing illicit opioids such as heroin and fentanyl.  Following will be a panel discussion on strategies to address the opioid crisis, including addiction treatment and efforts to prevent overdoses.

    Arts Education Week Kickoff Breakfast - September 13, 2018

    Marin County Office of Education, in partnership with the Arts Now Community, Marin County Cultural Association, Youth in Arts, and the California Alliance for Arts Education, is hosting a networking breakfast to kickoff Arts Education Week in support for arts education in Marin County.  Join local leaders to discuss how we can collectively create quality arts education for each and every student in Marin County.  September 13, 2018, 7:30am-9:30am - Marin Center - Redwood Foyer, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael.  We hope to see you all there!

    The Marin County Office of Education has collaborated with Canal Alliance to inform and educate our community on what we know about the upcoming census, how it will affect our hard to count communities, and what is to come.  A diverse audience from education, government, philanthropy, nonprofit and business are invited to attend.     2019 United States Senate Youth Program - Deadline to Apply is October 5, 2018

    The California Department of Education (CDE) has announced their 57th annual United States Senate Youth Program.  The CDE coordinates this competition for outstanding junior or senior students who are interested in pursuing careers in public service.  All public and private high schools in the state are invited to nominate up to two juniors or seniors to participate. The deadline for apply is October 5, 2018.

    Title III

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title III, Part A, Section 3121, requires each Title III English Learner Program subgrantee to report on language instruction programs and activities it conducts. The California Department of Education (CDE) has created an online survey to comply with this requirement to report on the 2017–18 school year. The online survey will be available from August 13, 2018, through September 14, 2018.  If you are part of the consortia, you will be asked to complete a survey via email and submit to Laura Trahan for overall submission as consortia.  As a reminder, consortia members are those districts that generate a formula subgrant of less than $10,000 in any school year.  At this time, the following districts are part of the Marin LEP Consortia: 

    • Bolinas-Stinson
    • Kentfield
    • Larkspur-Corte Madera
    • Laguna, Lagunitas
    • Marin County Office of Education
    • Mill Valley
    • Nicasio
    • Ross Valley
    • Reed
    • Sausalito-Marin City
    • Tamalpais Union High School

    All other districts are considered “direct-fund” districts and will be expected to complete the survey directly. Click here to take the survey!

    California Distinguished Schools - 2019

    Below is a message from the California Department of Education regarding the California Distinguished Schools Program for 2019 as well as a PDF presentation of the County Coordinator Webinar that was held on July 19, 2018 with more details.

    "We are excited to share information related to this years' California Distinguished Schools (DS) Program. The California DS Program recognizes elementary and middle and high schools in alternate years, and allows eligible schools to apply for the California DS Award once every two years. Schools recognized as a California DS Awardee hold the DS Title for two years.

    Eligibility Criteria: Multiple measures are used from our accountability system to identify eligible schools based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard (Dashboard). Information regarding the Dashboard is provided on the California Department of Education (CDE) California Accountability Model and School Dashboard website. In 2019 California will recognize outstanding education programs and practices in middle and high schools. Eligible schools were selected within the following three categories:"

    High School:

    • Category 1: Outstanding Student Performance
    • Category 2:  Closing the Achievement Gap

    Middle School:

    • Category 1:  Exceptional Student Performance
    • Category 2:  Closing the Achievement Gap: Additionally, there is a 2019 Proposed Eligibility Criteria for Dashboard Alternative School Status - information on this is forthcoming.

    Exemplary Program Awards: Schools can apply to be recognized for a California Exemplary Award. Schools applying for a California Exemplary Award must have meet the eligibility criteria to be a California DS to be recognized for a California Exemplary Award.
