Marin County Teacher Voices:

Work Environment Conditions that Impact Teacher Practice & Program Quality

The Marin County Office of Education approached The Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE) to conduct a study examining the adult work environment for center-based teaching staff using the SEQUAL (Supportive Environmental Quality Underlying Adult Learning measure. Just as children’s environments can support or impede their learning, work environments promote or hinder teachers’ practice and ongoing skill development. This research adds to the growing body of evidence on the influence of workplace supports on program quality and improvement efforts. Further, this research helps the field identify which types of supports are most critical to the well-being of teachers and high quality care of children and which supports differ between centers with differing characteristics. Findings from this study were used to inform lead agencies, policy makers and others interested in designing technical assistance, coaching, and other quality improvement efforts to improve the work environments for teaching staff employed in center based early care and education programs.

The 2019 SEQUAL Study: Marin County Teacher Voices was funded by Marin County Office of Education, Marin Community Foundation, Marin Child Care Council, First 5 Marin and the Marin County Child Care Commission.
